I approached Pete wanting to learn to play jazz bass and he has tailored his teaching wonderfully to my fairly rudimentary level. He has the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience to help you improve, regardless of your learning style. He is patient and passionate about his subject and colours his instruction with references to the various musicians that have informed the style you’re trying to learn, so that you’re always aware of the context within which you are doing a given exercise or learning a piece of theory. The lessons are thoroughly enjoyable and you’ll come away musically richer in technique, theoretical and historical knowledge — highly recommended!

Peter is an exceptionally talented bassist with outstanding theoretical knowledge to boot. What sets him apart as a teacher is his ability to help marry playing and theory in a way that is truly engaging and encouraging for all levels of ability.

The bass lessons that Pete provided for me were a top up on certain techniques to fill in gaps within my capability. The detail in delivering the lessons, coupled with friendliness and patience were a breath of fresh air compared to my initial lessons of some 30 years ago. He instilled confidence not only in me regarding his approach, but confidence to accomplish set tasks. For anyone requiring top up techniques or just starting out in bass playing, I can personally recommend.

Pete was an incredible gift for both music and for teaching. His warm patient personality is ideal for anyone, whether a beginner or advanced player, to learn and hone their bass playing skills.

Pete is a fantastic bass teacher and fast became a great friend. Every lesson with Pete was unique and he was able to cover a huge range of musical styles and techniques to accelerate my playing.

One week we would be rocking to Crossroads by Cream, mastering the funk & soul genre with James Brown and Chic; then the next we would be diving into classical music with Bach. He was also instrumental in helping me with my ambition to play in a band.

His wealth of live experience helped me to prepare for being on stage and guiding me through writing my own original pieces. It was an invaluable insight on how to perform and work with a live band. If you’re looking to master all parts of the instrument, I couldn’t recommend Pete highly enough!

I came across Peter when I was looking for a local bass tutor. I’ve been playing on and off for most of my life but always get stuck in a rut with practice. I needed someone to point me in the right direction with a practice regime.

I’ve had a few tutors over the years but simply being a good player or a guitarist who plays a bit of bass doesn’t necessarily translate into being a good teacher.

Peter is a teacher by profession and it really shows in the way he approaches teaching the bass. He will take the time to listen to what you want and then structure your lessons accordingly using printed course material. Highly recommended whether you’re a beginner or intermediate player.

Pete used his deep knowledge and passion for the bass to take me from an absolute beginner to a competent player. Lessons always pushed me forward looking at a range of music from rock, pop, jazz, Motown, classical and beyond. Would focus on one piece for a few weeks until it was running smoothly and then a jump to another tune that Pete knew would test me and expand my horizons in the world of bass.

Whilst Pete always looked at the technical sides and music theory to help understand how the music was written and should be played, we were able to work with tab sheet music as I am not that technical, to enable me get a good feel for the tune being explored. I came away from my time with Pete being able to play songs from the likes of Chic, Japan, Bach, Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder. I would not hesitate in recommending Pete for whatever level of bass you might be at now, or want to achieve.

And I say that after spending hours upon hours looking through videos that complicate things and confuse me even more rather than clarifying things. The whole breakdown into tetrachords and how scale degrees are built is just amazing, thank you so very much!

My first lesson with Peter convinced me I made the right choice to study bass guitar with him… He has a rather scientific approach to learning which made great sense to me and piqued my interest. It is quite refreshing and a bit out of the box.
