The Complete Pentatonic Scale

The five-note scale that fits over almost anything — its five modes, how to remember them by counting semitones, four exercises, and the one note that turns it into the (minor) blues scale.

Five notes. That is the whole scale — and it is the one scale that turns up in almost every musical culture on earth, usually without those cultures ever having met. Learn the bass pentatonic scale and you are not learning a trick; you are learning the thing most melody is made of.

The short answer

The pentatonic scale is a five-note scale. The major pentatonic is 1 2 3 5 6 — a major scale with the 4th and 7th taken out — and in C that is C D E G A. Because those five notes contain no semitones anywhere, nothing in the scale clashes, which is why it sits comfortably over almost any chord. Five notes produce five modes, and the fifth of them, 1 ♭3 4 5 ♭7, is the minor pentatonic — the most-played scale on the bass.

The word comes from the Greek pente (five) and tonos (sound): a musical ladder with five steps instead of seven. You already know how it sounds. It is the scale under an enormous amount of blues, rock, soul, folk and jazz bass playing, and if you sit at a piano and play nothing but the black keys, you are playing it.

Why five notes get on with everything

Take a major scale and look at where the trouble is. In C major the 4th (F) and the 7th (B) are the restless notes — the ones that want to resolve, that rub against a chord if you land on them at the wrong moment. Take those two out and you are left with C D E G A.

What remains has a useful property: there are no semitones in it at all. The gaps are a tone, a tone, a minor 3rd, a tone, a minor 3rd. A scale with no semitones is called anhemitonic, and it is the reason the pentatonic behaves itself in almost any harmonic situation. There is no half-step in there waiting to grind against the chord underneath, so you can play the scale across a whole progression and it keeps working. That is exactly why improvisers reach for it.

It is also no coincidence that this particular set of five can be built by stacking perfect 5ths — C, G, D, A, E, which reordered inside one octave gives C D E G A. The 5th is the most consonant interval after the octave, and it turns up early in the harmonic series that any vibrating string, column of air or human voice produces. Build a scale out of the intervals the physics hands you and you get something close to this.

Which may be why the pentatonic keeps being invented. It appears in Chinese, West African, Celtic, Andean, Japanese and Appalachian music, in traditions that developed independently of one another — a pattern of parallel discovery that has a research literature of its own (see the reading list at the end).

Five notes, five modes

Because the scale has five notes, it has five modes — start on a different note each time and you get a different mode and a different character. All five below are drawn from the same C major pentatonic, so the notes never change; only the starting point does. The ringed dot is the root, and the numbers inside the dots are scale degrees against that root.

Mode I — major

The scale in its home position, and the sound most people mean when they say “pentatonic”: bright, open and settled. Major-key melody with the 4th and the leading note taken away, which is exactly what stops it fighting the chord underneath.

Mode II — suspended

Start on the 2nd and the character changes completely. This mode is all 2nds, 4ths and 5ths — there is no 3rd in it anywhere, so it commits to neither major nor minor. That is precisely why it sits so well over sus chords and modal vamps.

Mode III — minor

A minor mode, but not the obvious one. The ♭6 in it makes this darker than the minor pentatonic most players fall back on, and it is the mode people forget they already know. Worth learning deliberately rather than stumbling into.

Mode IV — suspended

The second suspended mode, and the most open of the five: 1 2 4 5 6. Play it straight after Mode II — same missing 3rd, different arrangement, and a noticeably different feel.

Mode V — minor

The one everybody already plays: the minor pentatonic, 1 ♭3 4 5 ♭7. It is the most-played scale on the instrument, and it is the mode the (minor) blues scale is built from later in this lesson.

The relative-minor shortcut

Mode V of C major pentatonic is A minor pentatonic — the same five notes, a different home. If you know one, you already know the other; you are only choosing which note to treat as the root. That is one fact, and it halves the learning.

How to remember the modes

Most players learn these by rote and then forget four of them. There is a much faster way, and it is the one I teach: count the semitones on each string.

Every mode below covers two notes per string. All you need to remember is how far apart those two notes are — and the answer is always either 2 frets (a tone) or 3 frets (a minor 3rd). So each mode reduces to a three-digit number:

Read those numbers along the bottom and the whole system is 2‑3‑3, 2‑2‑2, 3‑3‑2, 2‑2‑3, 3‑2‑2. That is it — five modes, five short numbers, and they run in order up the neck. Notice too that Mode II is 2‑2‑2, the same span on every string, and that some of the others are mirror images of each other: Mode I is 2‑3‑3 and Mode III is 3‑3‑2, the same digits backwards. The brain remembers patterns far better than it remembers positions.

The five-note scale can also be extended across four strings, which is how you will actually play it once the modes are familiar. Here is the same idea in G, with the extra string added:

Once the modes are genuinely under your fingers, layer the other kinds of memory on top: the sound of each mode, the fingering you use, and the intervals — major 2nd, major 3rd, perfect 5th, major 6th, octave for the major pentatonic. Doing that from the start is too much at once; doing it afterwards makes the modes permanent. And draw your own scale and neck diagrams. Nothing fixes a mode in the memory like having drawn it yourself.

Four exercises

These run from straightforward to more demanding. They are not just scale drills — each one is also working on something technical: smooth position shifts, accurate rhythm, and string crossing.

1 · The five modes up the neck

Play each mode in turn, then play it back down in pitch before moving to the next. The coloured bars under the TAB are the fret spans from the section above, so you can see the 2s and 3s as you play them.

2 · One string, in triplets

Playing the scale along a single string is the best position-shift practice there is, and it opens the door to slides and bends that staying in one position never suggests. Keep the triplets even and let the shifts be silent — the shift is the exercise, not the notes.

3 · Ascending in 4ths

Instead of running the scale in order, pair each note with the one two steps above it. On the bass this immediately sounds like music rather than practice, and there is a reason: four of the six pairs are true perfect 4ths, with the rest major 3rds. The pentatonic is unusually rich in 4ths, which is exactly why so many bass lines built on 4ths sit inside it so naturally.

4 · A four-note sequence

A pattern rather than a run: take four notes, then start again from the next note of the scale. Sequences like this are how a scale turns into vocabulary — you stop hearing the scale and start hearing the line.

Just one more note — the blues scale

The (minor) blues scale is the minor pentatonic with a single note added: a ♭5, dropped in between the 4th and the 5th. That gives 1 ♭3 4 ♭5 5 ♭7 — and that added note is the blue note, a deliberate dissonance from outside the scale that creates tension whether you approach it from below or above.

Worth being precise about the name, because there are two. Adding that one note to each of the five pentatonic modes gives five blues modes, and the two at either end have names of their own: Mode V is the minor blues scale (1 ♭3 4 ♭5 5 ♭7) and Mode I is the major blues scale (1 2 ♭3 3 5 6). When people say “the blues scale” unqualified they nearly always mean the minor one.

The important thing for a bass player is what this doesn't require: the modes are the ones you have already learnt. Every blues mode below is the matching pentatonic mode with one extra dot in it, shown in blue.

Notice that it is the same pitch each time, wearing a different name depending on where you stand. Against the minor pentatonic in Mode V it is a ♭5; against the major pentatonic in Mode I the very same note reads as a ♭3, sitting between the 2nd and the 3rd. One note, two jobs.

One step either way — chromatic enclosures

Here is where the scale stops being a scale and becomes a platform for improvising.

Take any note in the pentatonic and treat it as a target. Now put a chromatic approach note on either side of it — one fret below and one fret above — so the target can be reached from above or below. That is a chromatic enclosure. Do it to one note, then another, then all of them, and the five-note scale becomes something with very nearly infinite possibilities, while still having the minor pentatonic at its heart.

Blue notes, in other words — notes deliberately outside the scale. They are usually thought of as the flattened 3rd, 5th or 7th against a major tonality, but the idea extends much further than that: you can surround every target note in any scale with an approach note. One step either way, up or down in pitch.

Played carelessly this just sounds wrong, so a word of warning: the approach notes are passing notes. They work because they resolve, and because they land off the beat while the target lands on it. Start by enclosing one note in a line, not all of them.

How to practise all this

  1. One mode, twelve keys. Take Mode I and move it through every key before you learn Mode II. One mode known everywhere is worth more than five modes known in one position.
  2. Count, don't memorise. When a mode deserts you, rebuild it from its number — 2‑3‑3 for Mode I — rather than hunting for the picture.
  3. Say the degree as you play it. Root, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th. This is what turns a mode into a sound you can use over a chord.
  4. Practise the shifts, not the notes. The one-string exercise is the most valuable one here, and the least fun. Do it anyway.
  5. Add the blue note last. Get the five modes secure first; the (minor) blues scale is one dot away once they are, and a mess before they are.
  6. Play it against the major scale. Run the pentatonic up and the full major scale back down. Hearing the two semitones reappear tells you exactly what the pentatonic leaves out — very good ear training.

What is the pentatonic scale?
A five-note scale. The major pentatonic is 1 2 3 5 6 — a major scale with the 4th and 7th removed — which in C is C D E G A. It contains no semitones, so it fits over almost any chord without clashing, and that is why it is so widely used for improvising. What is the minor pentatonic scale on bass?

How many pentatonic modes are there on bass?
Five, one starting from each note of the scale. Across three strings their fret spans are 2‑3‑3, 2‑2‑2, 3‑3‑2, 2‑2‑3, 3‑2‑2 — the number of frets between the two notes on each string. Learning those five short numbers is faster and more reliable than memorising five pictures.
What is the difference between the pentatonic and the blues scale?

Surrounding a target note with chromatic approach notes a semitone either side, so it can be reached from above or below. Applied across a pentatonic scale it turns five notes into a very flexible improvising platform, while the pentatonic stays at its heart.
