Here we take a deep dive into the most used intervals within pop-tune basslines and riffs — the intervals that do the heavy lifting — and the top five bass scales that come out on top as a result. I would say the results are fairly well expected, but what follows is also a closer examination of the scales themselves, how they are used (or how to use them), and examples of pop tunes that use them — not to mention how to be inventive if you are jamming or writing for yourself.
By this, I mean that you usually have only three options as a bass player:
- Either you play your own bass lines, or riffs for your own original material (involving your pre-existing knowledge and compositional skills);
- You play basslines or riffs that are already written — whether you learn songs by ear, TAB or notation, learn pop bass riffs to cover, or learn something composed (needing interpretative skills on top of that knowledge);
- The third scenario is having to jam, or solo on the spot — also involving your own pre-existing knowledge and improvisational skills.
So first: the map
Bearing all of this in mind, here is a guide to our family of five scales, and the very important fundamental intervals (there’s that harmonic series again!) that connect all of them. Learning these will, as a bass player, be your road map to unlocking the skills mentioned above:
Secondly — what is a scale?
The word scale comes from the Latin term for ladder — scala — which is perhaps a good starting point in considering what scales are. These musical ladders lead you higher or lower in pitch, step by step in a graduated sequence (rung by rung), either towards or away from the root (the tonic, or key centre), which is the first note of the scale, finishing at the octave (double the root’s frequency — 12 semitones up). The other steps are known as scale degrees.
Scales are built with a set number of scale degrees:
- 5 notes — pentatonic
- 6 notes — hexatonic
- 7 notes — heptatonic
- 8 notes — octatonic
- 12 notes — chromatic (dodecatonic)
There are others, but let’s keep things easy.
What makes these scales interesting — what sets them apart, one from another, in tone colour and character — is the distance between those steps, our rungs on the ladder. The distances between rungs are known as intervals. As we shall see (skip to the end if you like spoilers!), learning and understanding these intervals will let you understand everything when it comes to the structure of chords and scales — the very building blocks, the nuts and bolts, of Western music.
Connecting the dots
All of the scales on the map have the same three intervals (two, if you want to get fussy!) at their centre, their core — mathematically, functionally, sonically and physically.
Great basslines are made by inventive ways of connecting the threads between all the possible intervals inside a chord progression; those threads can interweave with rhythm like the finest tapestry — and most importantly, they support and enhance the rest of the band.
The root, 5th and octave — the 1–5–8 pattern, “The Bass Player’s Friend” as I like to call it — is a great place to start when creating your own bass lines or jamming, because these intervals make a functional bassline that can outline any chord progression, especially when coupled with interesting rhythms. Getting used to spotting these intervals by ear is also a very fast way to learn existing bass lines built from the same shape — listen to “All Along the Watchtower”, “Linus and Lucy” (the Peanuts theme) or “Rio”.
As I have said before (see Developing Timing and the Inner Clock), the job description of a bass player is to provide the harmonic foundation for the chords, melody or vocal line above the bass line, and the rhythmic link between those and the drum kit — bridging the gap between rhythm and harmony in a creative, musically interesting way.
However, this does in fact restrict the bass part; not always, but sometimes, simply because of the harmonic, melodic or rhythmic space needed for vocals and/or other instruments. That sometimes leaves only a small footprint for the bass player’s part within a song’s framework. We celebrate those who break the mould!
Even so, that footprint holds a whole spectrum of possibilities — from simple one-note bass lines that follow the kick drum, or two-note rhythmic patterns (“Once in a Lifetime”), through lines built on roots and 5ths (“Happy House”), to highly complex and busy bass lines (“Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick”).
This is where a good knowledge of the following scales comes into its own — whether you are learning new bass lines, creating your own melodic riffs, or throwing in that killer lick! Added to this should be an awareness of the several different ways to play the same thing across the bass neck, so two different positions for each scale are presented here (there are many more!). That in turn opens the door to expanding these patterns across the neck with different fingering options, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and other expressive articulations.
Major pentatonic
The thing that makes the major pentatonic scale so user-friendly for basslines and riffs is that it is anhemitonic (without semitones), so it does not carry the tensions that the 4th and 7th degrees of the major scale would produce — which is why this scale fits so well over any major-chord situation. It must be borne in mind, though, that this scale is not a vertical foundation for chords — its use leans towards simple melodies, instrumental parts and basslines, usually superimposed over a diatonic chord progression (I IV V, say) to great ear-catching effect.
The root, major 3rd and major 6th make a very good pattern for the blues when played in crotchets (quarter notes) — play it twice as fast in quavers and you have a very credible rock’n’roll bass line. The scale can be heard in full, played on guitar, in “My Girl”. And for a great use of this scale as a bassline with amazing sequential patterns, listen to the bridge of “Master Blaster” — then try this climbing sequence, which works the same idea up the whole neck:

This time started on the 1st finger, allowing expressive slides into the 3rd scale degree. There are other reasons why playing the major pentatonic in this position can be beneficial: chromatic passing notes may be inserted between the 2nd and 3rd degrees, as well as the 5th and 6th, and the position opens the way to extending the scale further up the neck in a diagonal fashion. It also favours 1–2–4 fingering (the Simandl, or double-bass, technique), which can be more comfortable than one-finger-per-fret stretches in the lower positions of the neck.

Minor pentatonic
The minor pentatonic scale can be looked upon as the 5th mode of the major pentatonic — and it has a much darker sound, due to its minor 3rd and minor 7th degrees, making it a perfect fit over most minor chords. Another way to imagine it is as the natural minor (Aeolian) scale with the 2nd and minor 6th missing.
The scale can be heard in full in the bassline to “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out”; “Come Together”, “Give It Away” and “Play That Funky Music” are a few more good examples.
Here is the same scale again
This time with the root on the 4th finger — which has the added benefit of avoiding the minor-3rd finger stretch along one string in the lower areas of the neck. This position also opens up slides — for example 4, 1, 4–4 across the root, minor 3rd and 4th, sliding up to the 5th — plus hammer-ons and pull-offs, sliding up to intervals beyond the octave, and chromatic passing notes.
Think about “Low Rider” — an interesting riff in itself, as it starts on the flat 7th and rises to the root, a move known as a retardation — and notice how much easier it is to play that lower flat 7th up to the root in this position.
The blues scale
The blues scale takes its name from the popularity of its use in blues music, and may be looked upon as a minor pentatonic scale with one added note — a blue note, no less! The blue note is a dissonant note from outside the standard scale: here, a flattened 5th between the perfect 4th and perfect 5th, creating a chromatic passing note that builds tension played either up or down in pitch. Consider the flat 5th – 4th – minor 3rd – root descent in “Ace of Spades”. Perhaps the most famous use of this scale in full is the bass riff to “Sunshine of Your Love”.
Here is the same scale again
In 4th-finger position the 1–2–4 finger options are slightly different from the scales above, because of the chromatic note between the 4th and 5th degrees. One approach on the way up is 4 1 4, shift, 2 4 1 4 — and on the way down 4 1, 4 2 1, shift, 1 4.
The major blues scale
The major blues scale is perhaps mis-named, as it has a minor 3rd degree as part of its structure — one way to think of it is as a major pentatonic scale with a passing blue note. This is an interesting pattern to play one-finger-per-fret, and 1–2–4 fingering works well here too — sometimes you can combine the techniques.
Here is the same scale again
This pattern favours 1–2–4 fingering — the choice being 1 1 3 4, or 1 4 2 4 — with a one-finger-per-fret alternative of 1, shift, 2 3 4.
Here is part of the bassline to the bridge of “Sir Duke” — it uses the entire major blues scale, repeated up to the major 10th:
Notice the different key to the C-rooted shapes above — here is an opportunity to think about transposing scales and riffs. Playing everything in different keys is one of the best forms of practice there is. Most importantly: learn this riff and play it all over the neck, in all 12 keys!
The major and minor blues scales, combined
Below are four bars of a familiar 12-bar blues bass riff in A that mixes the minor and major blues scales, by placing the minor 3rd against the major 3rd in ascending order — that classic sound is one of the classic uses of the blue note. There is more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes, and what makes this well-known pattern really interesting is the choice of fingering and note placement across the strings — here we have a choice of three shapes. Add two different fingerings for each, and we have six ways to practise playing the same thing. The main thing to notice is how comfortable each pattern is to play — but more importantly, how the different areas of the neck alter the timbre and tone of your instrument.
Once you are familiar with the three shapes and their fingerings, play the whole thing across the 12-bar blues — four bars on A7, two on D7, two back on A7, then E7, D7 and home to A7 — and from there, take the 12-bar sequence through all 12 keys. Notice that some keys offer you open strings, creating further patterns — improvise with those as well: triplet raking, dead notes and so on. The major scale
The major scale sounds bright, stable and familiar — and it allows a great number of chord progressions that are equally familiar, if not by name then certainly by sound: I IV V, I V vi IV.
Naming
Major scale — or Ionian mode? The name is more a case of function for something that is very much the same thing. If the scale is being used in a riff — playing the bassline to “Express Yourself”, say — then you have just played most of the notes of the Ionian mode; listen to the final two chords of “In My Life” and you hear the major scale doing its tonic–dominant thing. Playing
Don’t worry too much about the name — this well-known scale has been with us for a very long time (more on that in the next article!) — but there have been some outstanding uses of it as a bass line covering almost its entire range: “ABC” and “I Want You Back”, along with the track above, as well as “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” and “The Joker”.
One thing to bear in mind is the sheer number of pop songs written around I IV V chords — triads which, between them, contain every note of the major scale. No surprise, then, that bass lines follow the pattern: play the root notes alone and you have already played nearly half the scale.
Here is the same scale again
Notice that this time we start the scale in 4th-finger position, with the root on the E string. The advantages: useful lower approach notes to the root, the ability to play a four-note chord (all the notes together) or arpeggio (the notes separately), less timbral change between lower and higher notes across the strings — and it lays open some interesting slap options.
Sometimes just a few well-chosen intervals make an outstanding bass riff. One of the coolest, most ear-catching uses of major-scale intervals I have heard belongs to the bassline of Omar’s “There’s Nothing Like This” — root, 5th and major 7th with a beautifully syncopated rhythm really sets this major-scale bass line apart. The natural minor scale
The natural minor scale (the Aeolian mode — let’s not get into names and functions again!) can be looked upon as being built from the 6th degree of the major scale. This very familiar scale has one of the darker sounds among the minor scales, due to its flattened 6th (alongside the minor 3rd and minor 7th) — darker, I mean, than the Dorian and the similar scales from the harmonic and melodic minor families. “Feel Good Inc” and “Zombie” fairly sum up the Aeolian mode as a scale in pop bass lines.
Here is the same scale again
Starting this scale on your fourth finger will, as with the other scales, give you access to different ways of playing — different patterns and note choices. This position allows various string choices, giving you access to higher and lower notes outside the scale, and it opens up a whole lot of timbral choices as well.

Why are these the five most used scales in pop music?
1. There does seem to be evidence that these five scales are prominent in pop music because their intervals closely match the harmonic frequencies of human vocal sounds — at the centre of which is the harmonic series, and the strong partials and overtones found there. That series has a dominant role in all of Western music-making, and our hearing recognises its intervals (even subconsciously) as stable; many cultures around the world have developed similar five- and seven-note systems for this very reason. As Leonard Bernstein put it in The Unanswered Question:
“I believe from the Earth emerges a musical poetry, which is by the nature of its sources tonal. I believe that the sources cause to exist a phonology of music, which evolves from the universal known as the harmonic series.”
2. There are other reasons behind our note choices as bass players. Consider the interval ranking derived from Carl Seashore’s Psychology of Music, reporting Malmberg’s psychophysical laboratory tests on trained musicians, in which intervals were sorted into an explicit empirical rank — an order of merit, from most consonant to least:
- Perfect unison / perfect octave — the highest rank of consonance
- Perfect 5th
- Major 6th
- Major 3rd
- Perfect 4th
- Minor 6th
- Minor 3rd
- Tritone
- Minor 7th
- Major 2nd
- Major 7th
- Minor 2nd
It is interesting to note that the first four intervals practically outline the major pentatonic scale — another indication of why that scale is so popular across so many cultures. For those of you jamming or writing your own bass lines: sometimes you want a bit of spice in there, and more tension may be added by selecting intervals from the right of the graph! I would perhaps tweak this list in favour of modern-day dissonance acceptance — but it is fairly representative of how people hear dissonance. The point is: looking at this graph, we soon realise why the bass player’s job is to stay towards the left. Our job is to support and enhance what is going on around us, without stepping on too many musical toes.
3. As I have said before, the job description of a bass player is to provide the harmonic foundation beneath the chords, melody and vocal line — so we are, in a way, shackled to chord tones. But some Houdinis learn how to break free!
The bass player’s other friend
The bass player’s other friend adds the flat 7th — root, 5th, flat 7th, octave — and is perhaps the most predominantly used group of intervals in bass riffs. It is the flat 7th that really gives the pattern its character.
This very simple, very widely used pattern has a lot going for it:
- There is no major or minor 3rd in the pattern;
- It works over both dominant and minor chords — which many pop songs are built on;
- It works over a blues chord progression;
- It works through modulations of dominant and minor chords;
- The intervals sit beautifully under the fretting fingers in one position;
- It can be embellished with hammer-ons or chromatic passing notes.
The pattern works extremely well over the standard 12-bar blues progression (I, IV and V), especially at a slower tempo (80–100 bpm) with a swing rhythm — the Groove Trainer’s swing preset makes a good bed for it. The pattern is open to many variations of pitch direction, triplet rhythms and hammer-ons — more variations are possible — experiment! Other notable songs that use it: “I Feel Good”, “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time”, “Play That Funky Music”, “Drop It in the Slot”, “Groove Is in the Heart” and “Taxman” are some great examples.
Fretting-hand fingers
I have deliberately not talked about fretting fingers extensively in this article, as this is always a matter of personal choice (I will be covering it in future articles). I would say that 1–2–4 fingering — the Simandl, or double-bass, technique — is on the whole more comfortable than one-finger-per-fret stretches in the lower positions of the neck. The best way forward is to experiment with both and discover which works best for you.
A final mention — rhythm!
This is perhaps the most important ingredient in everything above — the ingredient that may well get you through an audition, put the edge on your performance, or make your own compositions shine: rhythm!
Experiment with all ten rhythms with every scale we have discussed, either one rhythm at a time or in combination — there is a lot of beneficial mileage here for practice and improvising. Bridge the gap between rhythm and harmony to the best of your ability! All the scales above produce common melodic patterns that are useful for fills and soloing (in small fragments), and playing them with and without a metronome or drum machine — see ours! — will improve dexterity, stamina, evenness of tone and rhythmic precision. They all make quite good warm-up exercises as well.
As with most exercises, they can be expanded by using different rhythms, accenting different beats of the bar, playing in different areas of the neck and in different keys, saying the note names out loud, experimenting with tempo, and using these patterns as the beginnings of improvisation.
A closing thought
What if we were to combine all the intervals from our five scales? We end up with this — almost a complete 12-tone chromatic scale. (If we had included the Phrygian scale, with its flat 2nd, the map would indeed be complete.)
The point I am making is that nothing is written in stone with music — especially if you are improvising solos, jamming riffs or writing your own material. (There are many pop bass riffs that use this idea, and learning it will help you spot them!) All these notes are yours; they can be used, combined as passing notes, or included to create tension and release — all worth experimenting with. Use them well. The combinations of pitch, phrasing, rhythm, key, timbre, tempo, mood, emotion, effects and musical style may well be infinite!

Bass scales — common questions
- What are the five bass scale families?
- The major pentatonic, the minor pentatonic, the major scale, the natural minor scale and the blues scale (with its major-blues cousin). Between them they cover the overwhelming majority of pop, rock, soul and blues basslines — and they all share the same core: root, 5th and octave.
- Which bass scale should I learn first?
- Start with the root–5th–octave pattern (the bass player’s friend), then the major and minor pentatonic scales — five notes each, no semitones, and they fit almost anything. Add the blues scale’s flat 5th next, then the full seven-note major and natural minor scales.
- What is the difference between the major and minor pentatonic?
- They are the same five-note scale started from different degrees: the minor pentatonic is the 5th mode of the major pentatonic. The major pentatonic runs 1–2–3–5–6 and sounds bright; the minor pentatonic runs 1–♭3–4–5–♭7 and sounds darker — a perfect fit over most minor chords.
- What is the blues scale on bass?
- A minor pentatonic scale with one added chromatic note — a flattened 5th between the 4th and the 5th, the “blue note”. Played as a passing note it creates the tension you hear in riffs like “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Ace of Spades”.

- Scales are named by how many notes they hold: five (pentatonic), six (hexatonic), seven (heptatonic), eight (octatonic), right up to all twelve (chromatic). There are hundreds of possible scales — but the five families on this page do the heavy lifting in popular music.
- Do I need to read music to use these scales?
- No — every shape on this page is drawn on the fretboard with the degrees in the dots, and every run is given in TAB as well as notation. Reading helps, but the map works either way.
